The Massive Gravity Octet is a modern jazz group co-led by John Nicholson (woodwinds) and Andrew Thomson (Drums). The group plays original music that has its foundation rooted in the Jazz tradition but is wide-ranging and progressive, pulling influences from Indian Carnatic music to rock and modern classical. The members of the band are from all over Canada, but half the group now lives in Toronto and the other half in Montreal.

The trio navigates original compositions and standard repertoire exploring varied rhythmic and harmonic frameworks. Concepts of recession and growth, varied dialogue between spontaneity and intricate composition, time experienced on both the micro and macro levels and polyrhythmic interactions with the goal of highly subjective perceptual flexibility. Informed by Carnatic rhythmic ideas, of how time and space can be experienced with great accuracy by way of interacting large-scale and small-scale frameworks. The goal to infuse multi- cultural musical practices and procedures into a Canadian Jazz context.

Join us for an evening of original music by bassist/composer Cole Birney-Stewart.

The theme of this band is the 88 modern constellations, from which each of the tunes we will playing draws it's name. Each tune also features a polyrhythm created from the numbers 2-8, of which there are 14 distinct types.
